A Dark Room v1.3 is Live!

I finally got around to testing and publishing the very first build containing code from all you awesome GitHub contributors. I had pretty much nothing to do with all the improvements that have gone in. Thanks so much everyone!

Among other things, the release includes:

  • Stores view now persists on the other tabs
  • Medicine, poison, and a few new encounters
  • Touch controls for the Dusty Path

I have 10 traps but they don’t seem to do anything, I never get fur or any of the other expected items for some reason. Any idea what could be going on?

I stumbled upon this game a few hours ago while browsing chrome experiments. I must admit it seems like quite an experience, except… Ive been playing for the past few hours almost nonstop, and nothing seems to be happening. I have The Room, and a fully upgraded Raucous Village, and nothing happens. A disease or two, but ppl move right back in. I just traded with a nomad, thats new, but otherwise its been, well quite boring for the past 3-4 hours.

haha i have plenty of supplies:
      bait1073
      charm1
      cloth3
      cured meat1867
      fur4707
      leather2007
      meat1659
      scales202
      teeth168
      torch42
      wood7613
      bone spear80

So.. what am i doing wrong? or do i just have to be patient 🙂

Hey, possible bug – I have my village set to use hunters to bring in 23 meat every 10 seconds and to use 20 meat every 10 seconds to make cured meat so I should be 3 meat to the positive every 10 seconds but my meat is going down at least 28 to 30 every 10 seconds. Cannot figure out why.

Any help would be appreciated. I can send you the exported settings if you need.
          Thanks.

Great game by the way have been playing it for months and love it.

Hover over the meat in the stores view, and it should show all the things that affect it. Perhaps you are making bait? Or thieves?

          2. Richard

            AH-HA!

            Thieves it is.

Hmmm, is there any way to stop or lessen thieves?

Thanks so much for your help, quick response, and great game.

I’ve liberated the coal mine, but I died later on during the same venture in the world. Now on the map that location has gone grey, but I can’t hire anyone as a coal miner. Do I need to restart?

That… shouldn’t happen. I’m trying to reproduce the issue here so I can fix it, but in the meantime you can fix your game by entering the following code into the javascript console:

      $SM.add('game.buildings["coal mine"]', 1);

Hi, I’ve probably die when I went home from spaceship, or didn’t have enough alien alloy. Don’t remember. Anyway the spaceship is gray on Dusty Path map and I have not anything new in menu and can’t continue with game.

That looks like the same bug that Andrew encountered… I’m still trying to track it down, but the following console command should enable the ship:

      Ship.init();

I have experienced the same bug. Dying after visiting the ship greys it out but doesn’t enable it, making the game unwinnable. Though, there is a certain poetry in being stranded forever due to violence (if you were killed) or an inhospitable environment due to environmental degradation (if you starved / died of thirst).

Unrelated: it is possible to have the tannery unlock before you’ve built a single hut. In this case, builder’s comment about “the villagers” is a little odd. Dropping the word “the” depending on whether or not any villagers have arrived suggests itself as one possibility.

Related to the second part of my comment:

The villagers can retreat to mourn their dead even when there are 0 villagers left alive (as may happen when you only have 1 hut).

          Unrelated (well, tangentially related):

I wish it were possible to either operate the smokehouse oneself or, better, ask builder to (instead of gathering 2 wood) or, best, purchase cured meat from the wandering nomad who sells scales, teeth, and compass. Then it should be possible, perhaps depending on map layout, to complete the game without building any huts at all, for those wanderers who prefer solitude (duo-tude?) and silent forests to raucous villagers and/or have developed a peculiar interest in a forgotten technology once known as “hard mode.”

It’s still doing that? I thought I fixed that bug weeks ago…

EDIT: Aha! I fixed it for real this time. It only occured if you visited an Outpost after visiting the Ship and THEN died.

    Curses/diseases are too violent 🙁
My people keep dying and I can’t find any medicine nearby… can’t we craft them??
I think you should add a way to get herbs and stuff, maybe rare SEEDS found in the dusty path that we can plant to make BUSHES that sometimes grow a BERRY we pick up, so that we could craft medicine maybe, because it’s really annoying :/

You can trade it in the trading post. Or explore the map more and try your best not to miss click ‘use medicines’. It got me a few times when I was spamming attack and eat meat ;P I always got over curse or disease following the method I mentioned just now as I always keep my medicine at 5 minimum. Though I admit at the start you need to make it quite a priority to collect medicine and then it will be all good to occasionally check if the medicine count is enough =)

I was on the Dusty Path and found a Destoyed Village “U”. When I entered it said there was a shack with supplies and a text box that said “Take”. Unfortunately the text box was unclickable and there was no way for me to exit the screen other than to refresh the browser costing me my Bayonet among other things. I had not seen this on the Dusty path before…is it new? Is it a bug?

There was a bug with a new feature, yes. It is fixed now, though, so just do a full refresh of the page and all should be well!

I have gotten the “U” again and it seems to have given me decimal amounts in my supplies available. Is this givng you a portion of stuff from previous games? In another case I came across the destroyed village with not much space available and the “Take” did not show up…only “Leave” Do you need a certain amount of free space?

Same here, only I’ve replayed the game about 6 times now, and so far I have yet to see anything available at the U site. Am I supposed to do something per game to make it populate for the next time? So far all it does is threaten decimalization of all my existing supplies!

Hey, if you ever patch or update this game again, I just want to call attention to an issue that drove me crazy. Once you use the last of an item, you lose the ability to make it. This might make sense for some items, but with alien alloy it’s ruined my game twice, stopping me from winning. I used my alien alloys all accidentally, and with not enough upgrades to my ship, I’ve been prevented from beating the last part of the game.

Anyway, thanks for the game. I really enjoyed it a lot despite that one gripe.

as habit forming as an opiate dispenser in a rat cage. Only problem I’ve encountered (after completing the game 5 or six times, best score was 750k,) is I can no longer light fire…. after restarting that is.
This is probably better for hopes of getting anything else done…but the room is freezing… i feel salty. Any idea why I can’t play again? Or suggestions to re-restart?

no sir… least not that i can reckon ( is it because i’m computer illiterate?)

just tried a few routes to try and get it started again…. i think it knows me and that i have stuff to do…. kind of odd, if i scroll down to the restart option on the lower right side of screen, the window that offers “Retsart, yes or no” same problem with the opening screen, I can not light a fire, or choose ‘yes’ to restart…lets me choose ‘no’…..

    thanks for the quick response!

That’s very odd… If you open the console (f12 in most browsers) and click one of the buttons that doesn’t work, do any message appear? If not, I’m stumped…

just reopened the game and the option to click on my ‘raucous village’ has entirely disappeared. i have 0 wood and cannot deploy more gatherers, as i can’t click on the village tab, so the game is essentially dead. any idea what’s going on?

      Looks like there’s a bug… I can’t fix it right now, but here’s a workaround:

Open your javascript console and type the following

      Outside.init();

That should give you access to the village, which will sort everything out.

EDIT: I lied, and hotfixed it just now. Haven’t tested the fix, but if you refresh everything should be okay.

Trying to play without building any huts. I’m up to 21 traps with lots of fur, meat, some scales and teeth… But nothing is changing. I don’t have an option to build anything else and there isn’t a dusty path. I’m just carting wood and checking traps… Do I have to buy all 30 traps? Or when will something happen?

Build options depend on your available stores. Save up enough, and other options will become available.

Completed the game on iOS and it was a worthwhile experience, thanks. Now I’m trying to complete it in browser without building any huts. But is it possible in the browser version? I’ve opened A Dusty Path but don’t have any cured meat, so the “Embark” button is grayed out.

    Reply
    1. Michael Post author

Nope, it’s not possible in the browser version. Cured meat is required to embark, which you cannot acquire without workers.

Played on my iPhone until I couldn’t stay alive long enough to ever make it home with anything. Tried it on my tablet in IE and now the Windows App but the little arrows on workers are too small to hit and the map doesn’t take tapping well it keeps going the wrong way. And why does it seem to destroy all my traps constantly? On ios it destroyed 2-3 traps maybe 3 times. In IE and the App it has destroyed so many so often I can’t build huts if I keep rebuilding traps

The original (non-iOS) interface isn’t really touch-friendly, unfortunately. It’s best played on a computer with a mouse.
It’s helpful to know that certain events only happen on certain screens. If you’re having trouble with traps being destroyed, try spending less time on the Village screen, and more time in the Room.

Ah, too bad. I did enjoy the game a lot. Didn’t even think that pure text game can be this fun and enjoyable until I played this. Thanks! =)

I am really enjoying this game. I have a raucous village and everything I need except the compass. I can’t get the compass because I can’t collect enough fur. It keeps disappearing or getting stolen. It is becoming frustrating. Any ideas/suggestions please?

Fur should be plentiful as the game progress. Do you have the traps max out? You can also try to increase your hunter counts to boost fur and meat production. And one final thing is make sure you don’t use up too much fur in the Tannery (building to make leather). Adjust that few parameters and you will be great in no time!
