A Dark Room save management

ADR now supports pain-free save management! Import/Export your savegames with the new “save” menu in the bottom right. Email your saves to yourself, you friends, or just post them online for people to steal!

Thanks to all the GitHub contributers who continue to make these improvements possible.

Using Chrome (30.0.1599.101 m), I exported my save and then tested reloading it but the game just restarts each time. The string starts “eyJ2ZXJz” and ends “Ont9fQ==” but precisely in the middle is an ellipsis. I’m wondering if Chrome is truncating the contents of the alert and destroying the save?

That’s strange… I’m running the same version of Chrome, and it works fine.
Which Operating System are you running?

@mikelyons of GitHub had the exact same issue, and I originally believed it came down to encoding. It seems it isn’t encoding. Issue 58144 on the Chromium bug tracker (https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=58144) raises this issue. There may be a chance that it is caused by a newline character being inserted at the end, according to posts on that issue. I’ll take a look into stripping newlines, but given that it doesn’t occur on my PC, it might be difficult to test.

Hmm, 32, or 64 bit? I have 7 64, with the same version of Chrome, and don’t get the error; yet the issue has been reported for earlier versions of Chrome.

Enterprise 64-bit. The save is truncated in Chrome the instant I buy a navigation device and the associated data is generated. I’m happy to test any fixes if it’ll help.

I spotted these JavaScript bookmarklets and they show the entire encoded string in a textarea on the page. The output string can then be imported no problem back into the game using either the other bookmarklet or built-in support.

I finished the game yesterday. It’s a personal preference, but I enjoyed the game more than Candy Box 2 – no small feat! Thanks for making this.

Oops… I should clarify: that’s thanks to Michael for making the game and thanks to everyone else for the improvements 🙂

          Hi,
I experiment the same save issue.
How do you use the bookmarklets you mentioned ?

I tried to create a bookmark to the file, renamed it with .js or .htm

Can you help me, I feel so stupid :-S
          Thanks

Chrome likes to truncate long strings, so if that’s you’re problem then there’s not much I can do right now. Those “bookmarklets” that Chris Davidson linked look like they function just by pasting the code into your URL bar. I haven’t tried them, though.

          2. Chris Davidson

No need to feel stupid; it’s not obvious how to use this!

I use just the “export save” bookmarklet as the output can be used with the built-in save support. Copy the entire two lines including the “javascript:” part. This should be the URL for the bookmark.

I use the Chrome bookmarks bar (Ctrl+Shift+B to show/hide on Windows). You can right-click on the bar and select “Add page…”. Set the name to something like “ADR – Save”, paste the code snippet into the URL field and save the bookmark. Then, if you click the bookmark with ADR as the active tab, the encoded save game string should show directly on the page.

Any chance we might see a stats page at the end of the game before restarting? I’d love to compare notes with friends about villagers lost, total X gathered, times died on Dusty Trail, etc. No biggie if you can’t, just a thought

If people are interested in building it, it’ll get built! I’m personally working on other projects at the moment…

(Don’t read if you don’t want spoilers) I just have to ask, but is the ending you’ve got so far the finale, or do you plan to expand the story past the planet and into the stars?

I just finished A Dark Room, and I came here to say that it is AWESOME. Hands down one of the best games I’ve played in a long time. I’m definitely going to be checking back here every so often to see what other stuff you come up with.

Hi! I’m using IE 9 and am having a problem wtih exporting saves. I used to be able to do this alright, but now when I try to export the save, the dialogue that comes up with the save text is blank. I was wondering if this is a problem with my browser and if there is anything I could do. Thanks for any help 🙂 (And wonderful game, by the way! 🙂 )

Update – I tried again with the same result, the text box looking blank, but I noticed (and it was probably that way the other times earlier) that the cursor was in a location in the box that wasn’t the beginning so I thought there might be text there that I couldn’t see.

I did get some text that I copied, but it looked longer than the other saves and had a huge part where “LCIuIiwiLiIsIi4i” repeated a lot (and importing the save gave me a newly-started game).

I need to restart my computer so it’s going to be a moot point for me but I wanted to let you know, just in case it was a problem with the game (although I know my computer is incredibly prone to problems so if I had to make an uneducated guess I’d say it was on my end).

I have a problem with saving/importing saves. Up to a certain point in the game, savnig wasn’t a problem but now if I try to save, the code doesn’t change at all compared to the one I imported to continue the game. So when I import the code, I have to start where I had started before. It doesn’t save my progress at all 🙁
    I’m using Firefox 26.0 and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit 🙂

Huh, that’s really weird. I’ve logged a bug over on GitHub. The problem persists even after you’ve refreshed the page?

I tried again today, and it seems to be working (which is weird, because it was bugging me for at least a week). I saved on Firefox, imported on chrome, saved on chrome and imported on firefox. I’ll try ‘regular’ saving and importing again and I’ll let you know if the issue reappears.

I am having an issue with the import command. I used to be able to select “Save” then “Import” and put my code in. The last couple of days, when I bring the Save window up it will not bring up the import window OR select Cancel to close the window. Is anyone else having this issue? I’ve tried Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome.

    Hello,

I started a new game yesterday, but I cannot export the code. When I click save -> export, I do see the code, I can scroll the textarea, but it’s impossible to select (ctrl + a) and copy (ctrl + c) the code so I can save it. The textarea also appears black if I use the WebDev tools to investigate it. When I try to copy the code using the mouse it is selecting a part of it although I cannot even see which one is selected; I know that because when I right-click I can see an option to copy the code, which grabs part of the code.

    I’m using Chrome 36.0.1985.143 under Windows 7 64-bit.

    Any help?

    Thanks in advance!

I think we’re being overly aggressive in swallowing keystrokes. If you select all the text (double click, or what have you) and then right click > copy, it should work. There’s a bug logged, but no one’s had a chance to get to it yet.

    Hi,

I’m having a problem with importing my save. Every time I import my save code it just restarts the game.
Also happening with older save-codes. Everything worked perfectly before. Maybe I just need to restart my PC. will try that in a moment.

    Thanks,

    Chris

The save codes for this playthrough of the game worked before, but still don’t work in Chrome. However, I am playing your amazing game in Internet Explorer with no problem, since the save codes work there.

I tried a a save code available online and it worked, so it must be something weird with MY code.

I’m using Safari, out of the three times I’ve saved and imported my games its only working once. I thought the inconsistency was odd. Will games only import if their from an early stage or is it the browser I’m using?

Should always work, though the codes get longer as the game progresses. Generally, when I’ve seen these issues it’s due to a missing = at the end of the copied code. Can you email your failed import code to me at michael [at] doublespeakgames [dot] com?

I just exported and imported my save, and the game restarts. I’m reluctant to start a new game — I was very far along. Would you be willing to give it a glance, just in case it’s a problem with a simple fix?

I’ve got a problem importing saves (importing just restarts the game) to a different computer (to and from chrome 43.0.2357.124 m), but it works fine when going to Internet Explorer. Can you email me so I can work this out with you?

Michael helped me resolve this issue. For those curious to know the fix, I was just missing a “==” at the end of my export code. Try adding it to yours (without quotes)

Hello, I was having the same issue as J, using Chrome 45.0.2454.93 and the export didn’t work neither in Chrome nor Firefox, It worked on Internet Explorer 11.096, then I saved it from IE and loaded it in Chrome successfully.
