Please, for the love of god reduce the random encounter rate in the Dusty Path. I want to explore, not to fight someone every single move. it is tedious and gets annoying quickly.

Dude. I just by accident beat the starship level. This was such a freaking blow under the belt, the game started over and I didn’t even get to fully explore first map! Do warn that the game finishes when you beat the star level =(

Nice game overall tho, good balance between challenge and fun. But damn.. I really wanted to see full map >_<

            It really isn’t that clear.
I just assumed it’d bring you to a new level, and you wouldn’t be able to return to the old one.
It was still fun none the less. I spent around 6 hours on the game.

          1. Ari

I second these comments: I’ve explored literally EVERY square on the map, and there’s no sign of the spaceship W anywhere. I really hope I didn’t do all that work for nothing…

I think there’s an error with the trapper. Right now he generates bait and uses up meat. Shouldn’t a trapper generate meat and use up bait – since they are “baited traps”? You’re not catching bait.

    1. Michael Post author

Hah, I suppose so. Honestly, I just couldn’t think of a better noun to use for “someone who makes bait for traps.” Suggestions welcome!

      1. Moe Hong

A trapper is someone who traps things using traps – they put bait in traps and catch things. Nobody “makes” bait – it’s what scavengers do, maybe? It’s also what hunters do – they make bait too. Maybe +.1 bait or something like that for hunters and just kill the trapper class entirely since they don’t actually check/harvest/increase the haul from traps.

    Thanks for a great game!

This is the true heritage of ye old commerce games (Taipan comes to mind). All game aspects are superb IMHO – except software testing. Twice I reached mid-game and twice the game “tilted”:

    1. When a nomad comes with his wares , if you buy a compass from him (when you already have one), this will open a second “dusty road” page. The result – no inventory options on any of the two. Thus you can only “Embark” with water and what else you’ve had earlier.

    2. When I came to the making of steel, it ate up all my cured meat – but on the “dusty trail” menu it still showed a number (15) and since that moment, this parameter frose. Other parameters kept changing but not cured meat. It stuck on both the home page and the dusty trail page. I think that what happened was, that I stocked cured meat exactly when the coal miners depleted it totally – thus creating a value of -15 which the algorythm couldn’t crunch.

So then, I’ve spent like 6 hours, only to get stuck twice and feel like a game tester (but without the perks). Still – a marvel of a game and I’d play it gladly again, but please iron out the bugs.

    Thanks
    Ruben

    P.S
I played your game on an XP OS, running the latest version of Firefox (Hebrew enabled).

Bullets aren’t made of steel – that’s just overkill.

There are cartridges, often made of brass or cheaper metal, and slugs made of copper or lead – iron will work just as well as those things.

Sulfur stands in for saltpetre here I assume, which is fine. But really, iron and sulfur are all you should need in-game – you would need steel for guns, but not bullets.

Would it be possible for you to make the trading post more expansive, to be able to trade for more stuff with other types of things, and possibly be able to trade unneeded weapons for other materials? Or would that make the game too easy or something?

    Thank you, really enjoyed it!

It would be nice to see the Stores on the Village page too, this way I have to jump back and forward to check the stocks and assign workers.

Also, I died two times because the bullets popup covered the “Eat meat” option in combat – now I’m careful to always have the rifle as the fourth weapon…

I agree with nfbs idea to put the Stores Page on the Village pages.
Maybe you can include a new Building, something like a “custodian” to unlock the Stores Page on Village Pages.

    Just a couple of bugs:

You can stroke the fire even if you don’t have any wood.
The price of scales and teeth seem to be off (150/200 fur for 1 item?)

Getting steel is a bitch as well.

This is a fantastic game. I “wasted” all day playing it. ;)

However, I missed out on a lot of the intended experience because I happened to play it in Safari. The notification div is totally hidden in that browser. All you need to do to fix this is add

    background: -webkit-linear-gradient(rgba(255, 255, 255, 0) 0%, rgba(255, 255, 255, 1) 100%);

to the rule for div#notifyGradient just above the existing background: linear-gradient property.

This game was fantastic. A friend sent me the link yesterday, and I stayed up all night last night collecting materials, building a village, and then finally exploring the world you created. Very creative for a text game, and extremely addicting to play. I also love the simplicity of it. It begins in a dark room… and ends with a journey through space, as the white screen slowly fades back to dark where it began.

I loved it. Thanks for making such a fun game!

Yup, you’re missing something. It’s possible that your vertical resolution is hiding a chunk of the bottom of the map. It’s about 700px tall, which I thought was totally reasonable at the time, but a lot of people have had that problem.

I am really enjoying this game. However, I am hindered by your save game system. First of all, I’d rather a manual save than the auto save, because I don’t like waiting 30 seconds before closing my browser window. But more importantly, I’ve spent all morning trying to find a way to copy my save game so I can continue the game I was playing at home while I’m at work. Could this be a feature somehow?

    Reply
    1. Michael Post author

It actually saves way more often that every 30 seconds. I just didn’t want the notification constantly flashing. Your save game can be copied, though it’ll take some geekery. The game state is held in the localStorage DOM node. If you copy its contents (using Chrome, or Firebug for Firefox), you can then paste it to the second computer. Annoying, I know, but anything more complex would require using a database and a back-end webservice. ADR is %100 client side right now, which is the only real reason that my server hasn’t exploded yet.

Hey, the game is a lot of fun! But the notification pane doesn’t work in Safari in OS X. it didn’t show up for me until way late in the game, and I assumed that was what was supposed to happen, but then I found out that it shows up right away in Firefox.

I loved your game! The plot twist at the end surprised me, but then it all made sense. My only qualm is that it’s so short :(

i did have a problem, though—on Firefox 21 (OS X), i couldn’t scroll. This got to be a problem late in the game when i simply couldn’t craft rifles because they were too far down on the crafting list and wouldn’t fit in my browser window! I managed to fix the problem my completely shrinking the dock, which let me expand my browser by another inch, but i don’t know what i would have done if i’d unlocked more items for manufacture later.

Hello! Really loving playing A Dark Room, but unfortunately when I try to “embark” on A Dusty Path, the game kind of freezes – I just get a minimal map and can’t seem to figure out how to move/control anything/go anywhere. In order to carry on playing I have to refresh the page, at which point it takes me back to A Firelit Room, having lost anything I had equipped my wanderer with.

I’m running Safari on Mac OS X. Maybe I’ve just missed something, though.

Since nowhere else do you use your keyboard, it really took me by surprise too. Although if you look at the code on github, there’s a folder called lib, which contains swipe data? I’m no javascript expert, but I think it’ll allow you to drag/drop your player across the map.

Hey, the reset button doesn’t seem to actually do anything to reset the game? Neither do clearing cookies or disabling and re-enabling Javascript, so I’m kind of stumped. I accidentally left the thing running after I got my first hut built and came back to a bunch of dead people I didn’t know had been there in the first place, so I’d really like to restart, so this is kind of sad.

Hi! First of all, let me just say that I love the game. However, I think I’ve encountered a bit of a bug? I have ‘thieves’ stealing my stuff, but I have no way to get rid of them. I’ve heard there’s a chance of you catching the thief, but I’ve been playing for awhile now with no such luck. Is it because I obtained the evasion perk before getting thieves possibly?

    Reply

Nevermind, they just found him! That guy must’ve gotten away with thousands upon thousands of supplies though, jesus

      Reply
      1. scienceguyz

if you hang him, you get it all back and the thieving stops.
Also, the evasion perk helps make monsters miss with their attack. Releasing the thief gives you the stealthy perk, which lowers the encounter rate. It also stops the thieving, but you don’t get your meat/wood/fur back.

Lots of advanced weapons and skills/power-ups. I had most of the power-ups (power, precision, gastronome, etc.) before I went in. Having as many weapons as possible, to fire in succession, is helpful– attack with both swords, spear, bayonet if you have it, and throw a grenade or a laser blast if you can.

/ Tip for players: to reduce time at it, try to bring the population up to 80 first, by investing in the huts, then onto the materials. Took me about 50 minutes to get that far.

And what does learning how to scout and the energy cells do, does anyone know? There seemed to be only one opportunity to learn how to scout but I hadn’t enough to make an exchange.

Scouting lets you see farther from the central ‘you’ square. Faster map coverage. It might also allow you to preserve discovered land after death (instead of having to re-explore it), not sure about that.

Energy cells: the second time I played this, they never came into play. The first time: there is a special weapon you might find.

Wow, awesome game! I just discovered it, and couldn’t stop. I love how each new “section” of the game you progress to switches to a new genre (but you have to keep switching between them). Really creative. As someone who played Zork back in the day, plus Rogue, and plenty of early PC RPG games, this was quite a walk down memory lane.

Also, I was thankful that the game is 100% client-side, because my internet crapped out on me halfway through.

I beat the game never getting the sulphur mine or using anything more advanced than a rifle. Now I’m kind of curious about the other weapons/power-ups…

Firstly, when you wander into a town where there are already people, and a ‘Youth’ attacks you, you shouldn’t be forced to kill him. I’m fine with soldiers and snipers and such, but having to kill a child is just kind of too much… Maybe if the Youth attacks you, and you have the option of, say, attacking or giving him food? Just a thought.

Second, it would be nice if I could see what *every* item does by hovering my mouse over it. For example, I spent nearly the entire game hoarding my Charms, because I had no idea what they did. Even if it’s just flavortext, it would be a nice way to help make the game easier to understand.

Third, when you’re at the “Firelit Room”, or the Town, it would be nice if you put the items into different categories. For example, you have the weapons shown in a different box than the other items. That’s good, but it would be MUCH easier to read if you split them up into different sections. For example, “Wood”, “Scales”, “Teeth”, and “Meat” could be under, say, “Raw materials”.

And, of course, I would have loved if the game continued past the Star level. But, then, who *wouldn’t* want the game to continue forever? Great game, definitely recommending it to friends.

Thanks a lot for the game! I had fun. Like many others, I really enjoyed the minimalism, but also the way the game changed and its scope increased.

    Thanks again.

That was certainly an interesting experience. I liked the atmosphere, but I feel more could have been done to connect me to the characters. There was too much of builder for there to be so little of her. And a gauge of mood in the village would be nice. I seemed to be a beacon for the lost, it would have been nicer for the game to reflect that. Just my criticisms. All in all, a wonderful experience to stumble up. I’ll remember this for years to come.

I love the game! So much fun. Is there any chance the notifications could also show up as desktop notifications on supported browsers? I tend to leave it gathering and hunting for a while and come back to many notifications.

I’ve always thought games should have mixed modes and levels of play like this one has. Towards the end, though I wanted lieutenants for my village. Dumb villagers couldn’t figure out how to prioritize their economy for bullet creation without me doing everything for them.
Good ole roguelikes. I’m glad someone’s still making them.

Also, I want foresters that clear areas for more huts, so I can at least create bullets while sustaining all my stores.

    Fantastic game Michael! So addictive!

Just a small query – any idea why I don’t have any other building options available to me other than trap? I have A Raucous Village with a pop of 80 but can’t seem to build any more huts or anything.

Thanks once again for a such a lovely game!

Apparently you run out of room for huts D:<
And 80 is barely enough for 20 hunters, 18 gatherers, 4 charcutiers, 1 coal miner, 1 iron miner, 1 steelworker, 1 sulphur miner, and one armorer. That's all it takes to make one measly bullet and one measly cured meat every 10 seconds.

Thanks for this awesome game MIchael !

I’ve beaten it one time and decided to not start over again because I had a lot of work to be done :)

It’s very immersive and the interactions are well thought, even if I still don’t know what the charms do (I’ve not peeked over the source).

It also made me want to invest a little bit more time on a project of the same kind I’m working on, thanks for that :-)

    Cheers

Can someone tell me what the energy cells do?
The game ended before i was able to find out the purpose.
Also; i highly recommend adding a “THE GAME ENDS AFTER THIS POINT” sign once you reach the spacecraft tab. I didn’t want all my progress to be wiped, and just assumed i’d be transported to a new world.
Really bummed out over that. I would have continued playing the game and not have finished it if i knew beforehand.

    !!SPOILER WARNING!!

So, are you an alien? I came to the realization that it makes a lot of sense that you and the survivors are alien stragglers after the war or whatever happened. Its why the military always attacks you, why no one except your villagers are friendly, why you know how to fly an alien space ship (and WHY you are flying one- you’re going home)

Have you noticed how if you get a rifle from killing a vigilante, it says in one of its many hands is a glint of steel. So you’re not the only alien. Also, when giving the charm to the old man in the swamp, he reminiscences on the good old days of flying the fleet.

I have tried multiple times in multiple browsers (Chrome, Iron, Firefox), as soon as I start mining iron it stops registering. I can have 30 people mining iron, and my stockpiles do not increase.

Awesome game! I played it twice and it was great!!

    Bug/Cheat:
To get a lot of resources quickly:
    1. click “Check traps” and “Gather wood”
    2. wait until the ‘saved’ flash (not sure if this is even necessary)
    3. refresh the page (F5) and repeat.

Suggestion: make the resources available only after the bars had cleared…

Would love to see more games from doublespeak :)

After defeating a cave, town, or city they will turn into outposts. You can visit them to refill your water, but only once per outpost per journey. After defeating an old house, it will say “still a few drops in the old well” and refill your water, but only once per house per game.

After clearing certain structures, they will be replaced with P’s. These have cured meat just for you, and will refill your water.

    An awesome game!

However I believe I’m stuck due to a bug – I have coal and iron, and it would not allow me to build the steelworks. Is there anything else missing before I can build it, or is this a bug?
Could be because I found steel before I had coal?

Builder says a stone quarry would help, says could afford more outposts
      unlocked after
      Costs 5000 wood, 200 iron, 100 steel, 50 sulphur.
Allows for stone miners, generating -1 cured meat and +1 cobblestone per 10 second.
With cobblestone in your inventory, walking on paths (#) changes them to roads (░). Each time you embark on a journey, there is a 1 in 12 chance that a temporary outpost will spawn next to a road (calculated individually, not that there’s a 1 in 12 chance that temporary outposts are all over the place) Each of these restores 30 water, instead of 60, and has 1-5 meat. After using them, instead of being grayed out, they return to what they would be if one didn’t spawn.
Also, walking on roads halves your water intake and food consumption.

I’ve already tried whitelisting this site. It caused the “share” and “reset” buttons to appear, but not the actual game.

The jQuery library is being loaded from Google’s CDN. If you haven’t whitelisted them, that could be your problem.

When I found this game, I was playing this for the good part of one day, then I realized I was on an incognito window. -_-

How I wished this had an import/export save feature… but I really needed one so I whipped this up.

I hope such a feature will be built-in in the future. :)

I seem to have encountered a bug. When I go to the destroyed village (marked U on the map). I have the option to “Take” supplies that are inside, but when I click the button, nothing happens. I get stuck on that screen and refreshing takes me back to the beginning of the game.

That’s not good! I’ll look into it.

Since you’re seeing the Destroyed Village, I’m assuming this is not your first playthrough? If it is, we have other problems…

No, not my first playthrough. On my first I rushed the final *spoiler* trip and I was using this playthrough to try to clear the map first.

Awesome! It refreshed back to my game! It’s greyed out the “U” on the map as though I’ve completed it. It’s all working now though. Thanks!

          2. Lorelei

I had the same problem – stuck on the U, clicking Take did nothing. Refreshed, ended up back in the Firelit Room – all my village and map progress are still there, but all the supplies I had with me are gone! Including my bayonet and energy rifle. Not best pleased!

      2. Mistranslated

Maybe I misunderstood your question here. It *was* my first playthrough today. I had played it about a week ago and beat it. But this was in a new browser window… No saved history, I would think.

      1. Lorelei

Not a clue! I was just playing normally. (Chrome on a Mac, if it makes a difference.) I noticed that one of the supplies had decimals showing, so I tried equipping it, and got that. Then I saw the others, so I equipped everything that had decimals to put it all in one screenshot.

I refreshed and everything went back to normal; it hasn’t happened since.

Are there any errors in the console? You could also try clearing your cache (but not your cookies and offline data. That’ll delete your save) and refreshing the page.

I recently deleted some programs that were causing ads to pop up while I was on the internet but I don’t think that has anything to do with it, (but I’ve been wrong before.) I also disabled (but not deleted) some extensions on Google Chrome.

I’m going through and disabling anything that might be interfering with the program… I just am not sure how it doesn’t show the task options but story events still pop up, such as when a nomad comes through to trade.
